Tirzepatide (Zepbound) is now FDA-approved medication for chronic weight loss

You probably heard or known the medication named Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) which is a medication approved for Type 2 Diabetes and was being used as an off-label medication for weight loss. As anticipated, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Zepbound (Tirzepatide) as a prescription medication for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with at least one weight-related condition on November 8, 2023 (10 days ago).

Tirzepatide is a weekly injectable GLP-1 receptor agonist that mimics the effects of two naturally occurring hormones, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). These hormones help to control blood sugar levels and reduce appetite.

In clinical trials, Zepbound is very effective for weight loss. In one study, people who took Zepbound lost an average of 52 pounds (23.6 kilograms) over 16 months, compared to 7 pounds (3.2 kilograms) in people who took a placebo.

Zepbound is a safe and effective medication for most people. However, it can cause some side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain. These side effects are usually mild and go away on their own. In rare cases, Zepbound can cause more serious side effects, such as pancreatitis and gallbladder problems.

It is important to talk to your Health care Provider before taking Zepbound to ensure it is right for you. They will need to assess your overall health and discuss any potential risks and benefits of the medication with you.

Here are some of the potential benefits of Zepbound for weight loss:

  • Significant weight loss: Zepbound has been shown to help people lose significant amounts of weight, with an average weight loss of 52 pounds (23.6 kilograms) over 16 months in clinical trials.

  • Long-term weight loss: Zepbound has been shown to help people maintain their weight loss over time. In a study that followed people for two years after they stopped taking Zepbound, they were able to keep off an average of 44 pounds (20 kilograms).

  • Improved health: Zepbound can also help improve overall health by reducing blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. It can also help to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
